Best known for his stylish portraits, Sargent experimented in landscape painting throughout his career, but did so with increasing frequency after the turn of the twentieth century. Several trips to Italy and Switzerland resulted in Impressionist views of glacial streams and rocky terrain. In A Waterfall, Sargent renders the falling water as skillfully as he handles the silk finery in a society portrait. Despite the close cropping, with only a small swath of sky visible, he illuminates the scene by deftly depicting sunlight seen through rising mist or glinting off the wet rocks.
